What non-profits can learn from a commercial approach to generating income

Last Thursday we met at Burton Street to listen to Andy Hanselman's take on strategies for success for organisations who are aiming to grow profitably. Turns out, Andy would offer much the same advice to a not for profit organisation, as he would to a 'for profit' client. And, after some discussion, many of us agreed.

Andy has kindly sent us his slides from the presentation he gave the cafe to share with you. Towards the end of the talk, Andy shared some powerful ideas around finding 'routes to profitability' and he has also kindly offered to share his Route to Profitability Toolkit with those of you who'd like to explore this further.

This cafe was kindly hosted by Burton Street who have been working towards generating over 90% of their income from their own trading activities. For the past few months Andy has been applying his 3D approach to some development work he has been doing with Burton Street. You can hear MD Clare Mappin talk a little bit more about how Andy's approach supports their income generation in the video interview she recorded for us below.

Many thanks to Andy and Burton Street for a great session.

Sophy and Clare discuss the upcoming Café topic, and what other charities might get from coming along to listen to Andy talking about how charities, just like businesses, can apply his approach to help them grow their income.

Before the café, we also asked Andy to say a little bit about what he plans to talk about in the session.
